  1. Your HSC mark gets scaled. Each subject has a different scaling table. Subjects with higher-achieving students (like Maths Advanced) scale up — you can get more than you put in. Easier subjects scale down.
  2. Half-unit values are calculated. For 2-unit subjects: your scaled mark ÷ 2 = half-unit value (and you get two of these). For 1-unit subjects (Extension, Studies of Religion I): you get one half-unit worth your full scaled mark.
  3. Best 10 half-units are selected. All your half-units are sorted from highest to lowest, and the top 10 are added together to give your aggregate.
  4. ATAR is calculated from the aggregate. Two polynomial regression models are applied, each rounded up to the nearest 0.05, then averaged. Capped at 99.95.

💡 Tip: English (Standard or Advanced) is compulsory. You need at least 10 units total to receive an ATAR.
